Critics not happy about movie's slow pace and lack of excitement were baffled by its focus on family and emotions rather than action and thrill. "The Mummy Returns" was commercially successful, grossing $433.6 million worldwide, thus making it the highest-grossing film of the series. "The Mummy Returns" has received five nominations at the Saturn Awards in 2001, winning one for Best Costume Design. Evelyn O'Connell locates her husband Rick's assistant Jonathan Carnahan in Cairo, Egypt, to discuss building a bank in Egypt with his financial company while also discussing Rick's expeditions to Hamunaptra while alive. Evelyn asks Jonathan to look after her son Alex should anything happen to her while she helps Rick find the Book of Amun-Ra that contains Imhotep's soul. Rick O'Connell is an adventurer who travels the world searching for the Book of Amun-Ra, the key to saving Evelyn and her son Alex. He is accompanied by his assistant Jonathan Carnahan, who vows to find Imhotep first. Rick and Jonathan meet with Evelyn's friend Aya, who she met on her husband's expedition where they destroyed the Book of Amun-Ra. She reveals that some mummies remain alive after their deaths. All these, however, are cursed persons that cannot be destroyed without first breaking some curse afflicting them first.
